Adelaide Ensemble
The Adelaide Ensemble is named after the Princess Adelaide, daughter of King Louis XV of France and avid player of the vielle à roue (hurdy gurdy): from about 1720-1770, the hurdy gurdy enjoyed immense popularity in France. Many aristocrats — particularly women — learned to play the instrument for their own enjoyment and personal enrichment, as well as providing live music for members of court. The Adelaide Ensemble performs this unique and long-forgotten repertoire, bringing the hurdy gurdy and a rich tradition of music making back to life.Â
