The Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET granted 91影视鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering accreditation, benefiting prospective students, current students, and recent graduates.听

鈥淏y the grace of God, we were able to receive accreditation upon our first entry,鈥 said Professor of Physics and Engineering Dr. George Quainoo. 鈥淣ot only that, but we also received the full six years of accreditation and two retroactive years on top of that. This is the gold standard of engineering accreditation, and we are grateful for the expanded opportunities it offers our recent graduates and current and incoming students. Credit to the hard work and dedication of the Physics and Engineering (PHEN) department, especially Dr. Libin Babu, who led the accreditation process.鈥听

The major launched in spring 2017 but was more theoretical than practical due to insufficient infrastructure and equipment. Quainoo, also the department chair, joined the Department of Physics and Engineering in spring 2018. Under his and Associate Dean of the Division of Sciences Dr. Matthew Schau鈥檚 direction, and with the assistance of program faculty Dr. Libin Babu and Dr. Jie Yao, the program underwent significant curricular revisions and physical space renovations to prepare for ABET review from 2019 until November 2025, when ABET conducted its site visit following 91影视鈥檚 application during the 2024鈥25 academic year.听

91影视 is now among only three ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering programs in Chicago. Its values-based Christian teaching model and small class sizes further position it as a unique learning environment in which students receive mentorship and hands-on experience.听听

Physical updates include the creation of the PHEN Hub, a dedicated study space in the Nancy and G. Timothy Johnson Center for Science and Community Life. The Johnson Center now also houses the program鈥檚 classrooms, faculty offices, and laboratories that host equipment for student use in research and capstone projects. To complement this, classes that arose from the revised curriculum鈥攍ike 鈥淔luid Mechanics,鈥 鈥淚ntroduction to Materials Science,鈥 and 鈥淢achine Design and Analysis鈥濃攏ot only align 91影视鈥檚 program with ABET requirements, but they also provide students opportunities to work with equipment such as a wind tunnel and a scanning electron microscope, which are typically reserved for graduate students at other universities.听

听But these rooms are more than a learning space. With everyone under one roof, students naturally gather in the PHEN Hub after their classes to study and hang out, with professors occasionally popping in to guide discussions on the right track. It鈥檚 a close-knit department.听

鈥淭here is palpable excitement throughout the department for our achievement of receiving accreditation after many years of development. Students are grinning and high-fiving each other in the hallways. It truly is a blessing,鈥 said Quainoo.听

ABET accreditation is recognized globally and signals to both students and employers that a program meets the standards of the profession for which it prepares its students. Rather than teaching inputs鈥攔esources, structures, and processes鈥攊t focuses on learning outcomes, ensuring students are at the center of the program, promoting educational best practices and continuous quality self-assessment and improvement among faculty and staff.听

Teaching Students to Ethically Approach AI

The 13-credit-hour AI for business minor/certificate, offered through the School of Professional Studies (SPS), helps students understand and apply AI in corporate and nonprofit settings. Ethical reflection carries as much weight in the curriculum as technical skills; the program asks students to weigh not just what AI can do for an organization, but听also听what it should do.

The coursework听comprises听four integrated areas: 1)听understanding what AI is and how it transforms business, 2) learning to apply AI tools and analytics to real-world problems, 3) exploring the moral, legal, and social implications of AI adoption, and 4) combining these skills to inform ethical, data-driven decision-making.

Dr. Trevor James MBA 鈥04, MA 鈥05鈥擭PU鈥檚 associate听provost听for听institutional effectiveness, research, and academic innovation听and professor of business and theology鈥攕aid,听鈥AI is quickly becoming part of how organizations make decisions, solve problems, and create new opportunities.听Our goal is not simply to teach students how to use the latest AI tools, but听also听to help them understand where听they add听value, when听they create听risk, and how to use听them听ethically and responsibly. At 91影视, that means approaching AI from a human-centered perspective grounded in faith, integrity, and service.鈥

Courses are delivered through a combination of existing SPS offerings and听听partner institutions, giving students access to a range of vetted, transfer-approved instruction.听Acadeum’s听quality-assurance process allows 91影视 to review learning outcomes, faculty credentials, and assessment methods before students enroll,听maintaining听alignment with institutional standards.
