91影视 (NPU) has added two academic programs for the 2026鈥27 academic year, which begins August 24: a听Bachelor of Science in Computer Science听and an听artificial intelligence (AI) for business minor/certificate.听Employer demand for these skills is growing听rapidly, and NPU is betting that graduates will need more than technical fluency鈥攖hey’ll听need to know when and how to use it responsibly.

 

A More Technical Pathway in Computer Science

The 60-credit-hour BS in Computer Science, offered through the Division of Sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences, gives students a rigorous foundation in programming, data structures, algorithms, software development, computer systems, databases, and AI and machine learning. Graduates will be well-positioned for careers in software development, data science, and AI, or for graduate study in computer science.

The program听expands听NPU’s existing Bachelor of Arts in Applied Computer Science, adding the theoretical and systems-level rigor of a traditional computer science degree听and providing听students听with two pathways.

鈥淭he BA in Applied Computer Science emphasizes the practical application of computing and provides students with a flexible pathway into technology-related careers, while the BS听in Computer Science adds greater mathematical and theoretical depth through areas such as algorithms, computer systems, databases, and artificial intelligence,鈥 said听Assistant Professor of Computer Science听Dr. Clement Essien.听鈥淭ogether, they听allow students听to choose the path that better听aligns with their听goals.鈥

Alongside the technical coursework, students take a required philosophy course, “Ethics in Technology,” to instill a habit of asking about a system’s human and social consequences.

 

Teaching Students to Ethically Approach AI

The 13-credit-hour AI for business minor/certificate, offered through the School of Professional Studies (SPS), helps students understand and apply AI in corporate and nonprofit settings. Ethical reflection carries as much weight in the curriculum as technical skills; the program asks students to weigh not just what AI can do for an organization, but听also听what it should do.

The coursework听comprises听four integrated areas: 1)听understanding what AI is and how it transforms business, 2) learning to apply AI tools and analytics to real-world problems, 3) exploring the moral, legal, and social implications of AI adoption, and 4) combining these skills to inform ethical, data-driven decision-making.

91影视 Theological Seminary (NPTS) has received a one-year $18,000 Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, which will support the enrichment of its weekly Community Worship services. The number of proposals this round was atypically large, and NPTS was one of 77 selected to strengthen Christian worship practices and preaching.

The project, titled “Centering Down: Contemplative Practices for Diverse Communities,” will expand and deepen the Community Worship services, which are the main community formation event for NPTS students, especially those who are local.听They are open not only to the entire 91影视 community but also to the surrounding neighborhood. Services begin at听4:30 p.m.听each Tuesday听at听Isaacson Chapel听on听the 91影视 campus.

鈥淎s the general seminary student population has evolved from individuals freshly out of their undergraduate programs to pastors who have already been in ministry for years, Community Worship has evolved alongside it,鈥 said Associate Professor of Worship Dr. David Bjorlin听BA ’06, MDiv ’11听who was part of the NPTS Spiritual Formation Committee that developed the project.听鈥淲hile听still providing hands-on preaching experience, it now also serves as an intentional time of spiritual nourishment through worship and interactive services.鈥

Seminary Administrative Coordinator Kara Shroyer,听who is an NPTS student herself, said, “These services are essential to seminary education because they integrate class and worship in听an intentional听setting, strengthening the connections students have with one another. The weekly rhythm of gathering also helps students and employees alike continually center on their ‘why.'”

Made possible through the grant, NPTS will invite guest speakers to share differences in听contemplative听worship styles across听cultures鈥攕uch as meditation or drum circles鈥攕o that students can broaden their perspectives. The practitioners will join students in their worship course one week to teach about their听contemplative practice,听then lead the Community Worship chapel service the following week so that students can see it in action. Immediately following the chapel service, the practitioners will听facilitate听a reflective conversation over dinner about the service and how students can apply it within the context of their congregations.

This is the seminary’s second time receiving a Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grant. The first was in 2017 for its “Worship Across” project, which explored worship across cultural divides, such as politics, technology, and abilities.

Two of 91影视鈥檚 recent graduates won presentation awards at the听2026 Beta听Beta听Beta听(TriBeta) North Central-1听(NC-1)听District Research Conference.听Joshua Brito BS听鈥26鈥攚ho majored in biomedical sciences鈥攔eceived first place, and听Andrew G. Daoud BS听鈥26鈥攚ho majored in molecular biology and biotechnology听鈥攅arned听third place. Saint Xavier University hosted the conference on its campus on March 28.

All presenters at听TriBeta听district research conferences are students with research grants, making the events highly competitive. As a result of winning the competition,听TriBeta听invited Brito to present his work at the听TriBeta听2026 National Convention, held from May 27鈥31 at Florida State University. His oral presentation, 鈥淭he Role of CCL21 in Tumor Surveillance,鈥 was one of only 10 in the biomedical sciences category.

In addition to achieving third place at the district conference, Daoud contributed to Brito鈥檚 research.听Relatedly, he听received听scholarships听from the Taiwan Education Exchange Program and听the听Friends of Taiwan Foundation听this year听for a 10-week research experience in Taiwan听over the summer,听during which he is conducting听cancer听immuno-epigenomics research at National Chung Cheng University under the supervision of Dr. Michael Chan.

Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Tracy O鈥機onnor and Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Paul Janus听advised听Brito and听Dauod听while they attended 91影视.

鈥淛osh and Andrew were a joy to have in the lab these past two years,鈥 O鈥機onnor shared. 鈥淭hey approached their projects with the work ethic of graduate-level researchers, working听over the summer before undertaking directed research for credit to gain the necessary skills to complete their projects. This allowed them to gain meaningful insights into the molecular mechanisms by which immune cells are trafficked into and out of the brain and how the brain protects itself from cancer. We听plan听to publish these results in a field-specific scientific journal next year.鈥

听TriBeta is an honor society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending the boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Each year, TriBeta hosts 12 district and regional conventions where members have the opportunity to present their research and network with like-minded students from other institutions. National conventions are held biennially.

91影视鈥檚 (NPU) School of Nursing and Health Sciences has acquired a Laerdal Medical MamaAnne birthing simulator, one of the most advanced obstetric training mannequins on the market, to enhance hands-on education for its nursing students. The high-fidelity simulator, which arrived on campus on June 1, will be used by Bachelor of Science in Nursing听and听听students.

MamaAnne is a significant leap forward from NPU鈥檚 previous birthing simulator, a 10-year-old Laerdal Medical SimMom that had exceeded its useful life. The new mannequin is considered high fidelity, meaning it closely mimics human physiological responses. Its capabilities include blinking, reactive pupils, realistic skin texture, palpable contractions, and a fully programmable delivery sequence. Instructors can customize vital signs, contraction frequency and intensity, and other clinical parameters to match any obstetric scenario.听

鈥淭his mannequin is a huge step toward the real thing,鈥 said Niki Nielsen, director of simulation education. 鈥淥ur simulation lab is the next best thing to a clinical rotation, and this mannequin significantly increases the realism in a way that directly benefits our students.鈥听

Beyond the birthing simulation itself,听MamaAnne听supports a wide range of clinical skills听practice, including medication administration, vital sign assessment,听and听urinary catheterization.

The acquisition also reflects NPU鈥檚 commitment to diversity and cultural competency in clinical training. Nielsen intentionally selected a dark skin tone for MamaAnne to complement the Kathy J. Holmgren Nursing Simulation Lab鈥檚 existing SimNewB infant mannequin. 鈥淚t鈥檚 critical to have representation of the various demographics our students will encounter in their careers,鈥 said Nielsen.

The addition comes as 91影视鈥檚 nursing programs continue to grow. With simulation technology now matching the program鈥檚 ambitions, NPU is well-positioned to produce the next generation of highly prepared nurses.

The听Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs听(CACREP) informed NPU鈥檚 School of Professional Studies (SPS)听last month听of its decision听following听a two-year review process.

SPS Dean听Dr.听Lori听Scrementi听called the decision a听noteworthy听milestone for the school.

鈥淭his recognition affirms the excellence of our faculty, the strength of our curriculum, and our commitment to preparing highly qualified counselors who are equipped to meet the growing mental health needs of our communities,鈥澨齋crementi听said.听鈥淐ACREP accreditation positions our program鈥攁nd our graduates鈥攆or a strong and impactful future.鈥

The CACREP board听based听its听decision on its review of self-study documents, the site听review team鈥檚 report, and听NPU鈥檚 response to the site review team鈥檚 report, according to a representative from CACREP.

鈥淥n behalf of the CACREP听board and听staff,听I extend congratulations听to all of those involved in making this a successful accreditation review process,鈥 said CACREP CEO听and President M. Sylvia Fernandez of the accreditation, which lasts through 2034. 鈥淪uch support is considered vital to assuring continued quality in higher education programs.鈥听

NPU鈥檚 MACMHC program is鈥a fully online, 700-hour, field-experience-heavy program designed to prepare students for licensure in Illinois and other states. It emphasizes ethical, culturally competent care with a Christian perspective, preparing graduates for diverse roles in community counseling, addiction treatment, and private practice.

]]> 91影视 (NPU) senior Osbeida Alvarez, who will earn her Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in composition this spring, has received the Presser Foundation鈥檚 2025鈥26 Undergraduate Scholar Award, which amounts to $3,000.

The award supports music students who have achieved a high level of musical excellence, demonstrated leadership and service, and contributed to an inclusive community. Alvarez, who plays the oboe, plans to pursue a graduate degree in music education. She said she chose the oboe because she wanted to learn to play her favorite piece, 鈥淭he Duck鈥 from Peter and the Wolf, and use her skills to perform in church.

鈥淢y time at 91影视 has helped me learn a very important lesson鈥攖hat 鈥榯he show must go on!鈥欌 Alvarez said. 鈥淚t also taught me to take the opportunities available to me. The Music Department professors have guided us music students to a better understanding of music and the possibilities of what we can do with it.”

NPU Professor of Music Dr. Joseph Lill said about Alvarez, 鈥淪he is a joy to be around, every day, every rehearsal. She is exactly what we look for in a student: someone who takes advantage of everything a small school offers and makes new students feel right at home.鈥

It is one of the few private foundations in the United States dedicated solely to music education and music philanthropy. ]]> 91影视 (NPU) has received an $8,184,203 grant from for its seminary, 91影视 Theological Seminary, to launch One Covenant Community, a collaborative project that aims to cultivate pastoral leadership across the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) by strengthening vocational discernment, theological education, credentialing, and lifelong support.

The project is funded through Lilly Endowment鈥檚 Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative, which supports theological schools in the United States and Canada in responding to their most pressing challenges. The NPU grant is one of 45 to be awarded in a competitive round of funding to support theological schools in their work with other seminaries; colleges and universities; and church-related organizations.

One Covenant Community will unite every major Covenant entity involved in congregational leadership development and support. Partner organizations include all 11 ECC regional conferences, as well as groups such as Serve Clergy and Serve Locally, Centro Hispano de Estudios Teol贸gicos (CHET), Alaska Christian College, Minnehaha Academy, Midtown Leadership Institute, Mission Springs and Covenant Harbor Camps, the Mosaic Commission, and the Association of Covenant Spiritual Directors. These partners will support church leaders with continuing education; strengthen partners鈥 institutional capacity; and foster Covenant identity, unity, and belonging.

Lilly Endowment launched the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative in 2021. Since then, it has provided grants totaling more than $700 million to support 163 theological schools in efforts to strengthen their own educational and financial capacities and to assist 61 schools in developing large-scale collaborative endeavors.

This partnership reflects 91影视鈥檚 mission to welcome and support students of all backgrounds as they pursue lives of significance and service in Chicago and beyond.

Since its founding, TheDream.US has awarded more than 12,000 scholarships to immigrant youth representing over 120 countries and 45 states, resulting in 4,500 graduates to date. The organization partners with nearly 80 colleges in 20 states to provide scholarships, career support, and access to legal resources that help Dreamers overcome systemic barriers and achieve social mobility.

Through data, scholar and alumni stories, strategic partnerships, and targeted advocacy, TheDream.US advances equitable access to higher education and workforce pathways for immigrant youth. For more information, visit .
